Hello my name is Gretchen Giles. I have a few friends that would like to start a community garden. Non of us have experience is starting or working in a community garden.
We are located in Grand Blanc, Michigan. Right now there are three of us, all business owners looking to get this started. One member has a few acres for us to use, one runs a landscape supply (mulch, soil…)company and I have a well rounded background in horticulture though vegetables are not my specialty.
The location was a tree farm several years ago and the soil is no bad shape, (still need to get a soil test when the ground is not frozen ;-).
The center of the area no longer has trees. Most of the remaining trees are around the perimeter There is a watering system in place. So that part of the plan is going well.
Becoming established entity is the next item to work on so when the weather changes we can get started on the infustructure and letting people know what we are planning. We are in the early planning stages so if you have any information on any of the topics below please let me know.
Setting up a non-profit
Sizes of individual plots. What is typical? Are there things to avoid?
Finding grants and support for additional start up cost
Rules/restriction. Are there some that are must have, some to avoid or items/issues we need to keep in mind. If you have some examples that would help
Start up lessons learned from other community gardens, what to do and pitfalls to avoid.
Are there any other member gardens that are in our area you think I should talk to.
I have contacted a friend at Michigan State University and will be talking to friends of two local garden clubs and our extension service.
I appreciate you taking time to read this letter and any help you can provide. Thanks gretchen
